Astrolabe awarded a Direct-to-Phase || Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with the United States Air Force (USAF) through AFWERX to address open questions about safely operating and maintaining battery systems in electric aircraft.
SEATTLE, WA. — September 23, 2021 — Astrolabe Analytics was awarded a Direct-to-Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with the United States Air Force (USAF) through AFWERX to address open questions about safely operating and maintaining battery systems in electric aircraft. The outcomes delivered will include standard operating procedures for online fuel gauging inflight, offline health maintenance, and end-of-life decommissioning. These results will be used to guide and inform battery system certification with the FAA and across the DOD.
“Unlike electric cars, pilots of electric planes don’t have the luxury to pull over to the side of the road if something goes wrong with their battery,” said CEO Robert Masse. “This is a much more demanding environment for both performance and safety requirements where standards have not been established yet. With this SBIR contract, we will help close that gap.”
AFWERX’s mission is to solve problems and enhance the Air Force's effectiveness by enabling thoughtful, deliberate, ground-up innovation across the Air Force. These awards will accelerate the goals of the Air Force’s Agility Prime program to deploy electric vertical takeoff and landing (EVTOL) aircraft. These in turn will provide the Air Force with increased operational mobility at a lower total cost of ownership compared to conventional aircraft.
AFRL and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research process in an attempt to speed up the experience, broaden the pool of potential applicants and decrease bureaucratic overhead. Beginning in SBIR 18.2, and now in 21.1, the Air Force has begun offering ‘The Open Topic’ SBIR/STTR program that is faster, leaner, and open to a broader range of innovations.
